Synopsis

Hiruma Yoshihito, a part-time university lecturer, reluctantly agrees to care for his nephew Kota at the request of his pregnant sister. Shortly after, Kota disappears. When Yoshihito finally locates him, he finds himself empathizing with the boy’s meaningful declaration, “I want to go somewhere else – anywhere but here,” as both share a deep disillusionment with reality. As their relationship deepens, they explore Yoshihito’s academic specialty: pessimism. The two develop an unusual living arrangement that, despite their pessimistic outlook on life, somehow maintains an peculiar sense of joy. However, both eventually face their own personal tragedies.
