Loosely based on the life of Koizumi Setsu (1868-1932), the wife of Koizumi Yakumo, a Greek-Irish writer. Has been boldly reconstructed and character names and organizations have been changed to create a fictional story.
Set in Matsue in the Shimane Prefecture during the Meiji era. Matsuno Toki is an unusual girl who loves ghost stories. She comes from a high-ranking samurai family, but with the samurai era coming to an end, her father ventures into starting a business. Unfortunately, the business fails, which leaves the Matsuno family living in extreme poverty. Living in destitution with no end in sight, Toki decides to accept a job as a live-in maid for a for a newly arrived foreign English teacher, who is of Greek-Irish descent. Abandoned by his parents when he was young, he was passed around among relatives before being sent to America. He kept searching for a place to belong, eventually ending up in Japan. At first, Toki struggled with the language barrier and cultural differences. However, they gradually realized their similar circumstances and began to connect emotionally with one another. Furthermore, they both love ghost stories! Surrounded by eccentric people, the odd couple begins a peculiar life where they share ghost stories night after night.
The Bakebake asadora will have two spin-off “stories” that focuses on Matsuno Toki’s friend Sawa (Marui Wan), and the maid Ume (Nouchi Maru). The spin-off will tell the untold stories of the people surrounding Toki and Heaven not depicted in the main series.
Alongside the spin-off, special interviews with cast members will be broadcast.
