Synopsis

Based on true events, this film is a coming-of-age music drama that follows the unnamed young people who transformed Japan’s live music culture. They pioneered what are now everyday staples: indie music, all-standing venues, rock festivals, and the D.I.Y. spirit – and in doing so, they turned the entire Japanese music scene on its head.

Back in 1978, as punk pioneers the Sex Pistols disbanded, something new was quietly emerging in Tokyo. In a world without smartphones, streaming, or subscriptions, a group of young, unnamed musicians created their own songs, studios, and records, forging a raw, free-spirited world known as “Street Kingdom.”

Their D.I.Y. approach sparked a movement called “Tokyo Rockers,” which blew open the music industry and paved the way for Japan’s indie scene.
