A Darkly Humorous Family Drama: *The Sisters’ Hot Springs Trip*

Acclaimed director Hashiguchi Ryosuke (Love’s Whirlpool, All Around Us) returns after nine years with this poignant family drama, based on the 2015 stage play by Peyannu Maki’s theater group, Busukai. Hashiguchi adapted the screenplay himself and re-edited the CS broadcast drama series into a feature film, produced by the Home Drama Channel.

The story follows three sisters who take their mother on a hot springs trip, intending to show their appreciation. However, tensions run high as long-buried resentments surface. The eldest, Yayoi (Eguchi Noriko), struggles with insecurities about her appearance compared to her beautiful younger sisters. The middle sister, Manami (Uchida Chika), harbors a grudge over being overshadowed by Yayoi, the family’s “model child.” Meanwhile, the youngest, Kiyomi (Furukawa Kotone), watches her sisters’ rivalry with a detached cynicism, sharing their mutual disdain for following in their mother’s footsteps. As they vent their frustrations in their room, their grievances spiral into a chaotic argument. The situation takes an unexpected turn when Kiyomi’s boyfriend, Takahiro (Aoyama Fall Kazuki of comedy trio Nelsons), shows up uninvited, further complicating their heated family dynamic.

With biting humor and raw emotional depth, this film explores the complexities of familial relationships, exposing hidden wounds and the unspoken truths that bind and divide us.
