Synopsis

This movie screened at the Bucheon International Film Festival in the Summer of 2025.

This work, which Shimotsu Yuta himself wrote the original story for, is a sci-fi psychological entertainment film offers a darkly comedic yet serious look into the psychology of group behavior through the lens of “kumi-taiso” — the Japanese practice of coordinated group gymnastics often seen in schools.

The story follows Ai, a shy high school girl, who becomes intrigued by Yu, a new transfer student returning from overseas. Despite her curiosity, Airi finds herself increasingly frustrated by Yu’s inability, or refusal, to adapt to the strict group mentality of Japanese school life.

One day, an eerie incident occurs: a student drops to all fours on the school field and refuses to move. Attempts by teachers and classmates to intervene fail, and soon, more students begin lining up next to him – in the same position. Strangely, the school starts encouraging this human pyramid formation, calling it a “good thing.” As more students pile on, they all begin to wear eerily serene expressions. Before she realizes it, Ai finds herself compelled to join the pyramid too.

What starts as a bizarre schoolyard phenomenon quickly escalates into a mysterious mass phenomenon that begins to consume the entire community.
