Synopsis
An adaptation about Suzumiya Miyuki, age 25, nicknamed “Goo-ko” at work because she often gets tongue-tied with a “goo…” sound when trying to express herself, despite her strong inner core. Known officially as Suzumiya, she insists “I’m not Goo-ko!”
“I became a civil servant because I wanted job security…” she says. Her job? One of the most despised professions – a national tax collector. Specifically, a Special National Tax Collector (nicknamed “Tokkan“), who handles particularly difficult cases of tax delinquency. Being called “thief!” and “devil!” is just part of her daily routine.
But tax collectors aren’t thieves… Tax evasion affects 130 million victims, making it Japan’s most widespread crime. Tax collectors serve as the “last line of defense” for national revenue.
Miyuki became a civil servant seeking stability, and after taking numerous exams, the only one she passed was for the National Tax Agency. She begins working as a rookie collector at a Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau office. Her superior, Kagami Masae, is an emotionless Tokkan nicknamed “The Reaper” by colleagues. As Kagami’s assistant, she pursues tax delinquents daily.
She encounters those who won’t pay despite having means, and those who want to pay but can’t… She seizes luxury cars, imported sweaters, and even beloved pets from wealthy madams who refuse to pay. She gets turned away from struggling factories, goes undercover to expose café accounting fraud, and confronts high-end Ginza club owners.
Through intense experiences that could make anyone lose faith in humanity, along with Miyuki’s personal past and family issues, the series follows her growth while exploring various cases involving taxes – something directly connected to people’s lives and desires.
