Synopsis

Based on the acclaimed novel by Shiba Ryotaro, who spent ten years meticulously crafting this sweeping portrayal of the Russo-Japanese War and the vibrant youth of the Meiji era, “Clouds Above the Hill” presents a compelling human drama of Japan’s transformation into a modern nation. Following the Meiji Restoration, the Japanese people experienced nationhood and citizenship for the first time in their history, embarking on the ambitious journey of building a modern state with the boundless hope and determination characteristic of youth during this remarkable “Meiji” period.

The story follows three men born in Matsuyama who would shape their era: Akiyama Saneyuki, the brilliant naval strategist who devised the tactics to defeat the Baltic Fleet; Akiyama Yoshifuru, the cavalry officer who fought Russian Cossack forces as an equal; and Masaoka Shiki, the revolutionary poet who transformed haiku and tanka poetry. Swept along by the turbulent currents of their time, these men confronted the challenge of creating new values while staying true to their principles, looking only forward as they climbed the steep hill of the Meiji era. This epic drama depicts how Japan, a newly born “nation of youth,” navigated its place in the world during this pivotal period of modernization and growth.
