Ooku

Synopsis

Adapted from the manga “Ooku” (大奥) by Yoshinaga Fumi (よしながふみ).

The story depicts an alternate history Edo where an outbreak of a new disease that only affects men and young boys wipes out a large proportion of the male population. As a result of this, young boys are raised as rare stallions, girls replace former boys in the workforce, and family businesses are passed from woman to woman, drastically changing the social structure of Japan.. The position of the Shogun was handed down to a woman after the third shogun, Iemitsu, abdicated, and the “Ooku,” (commonly known as the ladies inner chambers), have since become a place where a harem of the most beautiful young men are carefully protected and sent to serve as proof of the shogun’s prestige…
