Synopsis
Located in Hoshikawa City on Tokyo’s western edge, Kagura Village is one of Japan’s 10,000+ marginal settlements facing decline. Karasawa Toshiaki portrays Asai Eiji, a Tokyo Metropolitan Government official who arrives on a mission to revitalize this struggling community.
Asai was previously a star civil servant known for his passionate declaration “I believe nothing is impossible!” during a major Tokyo Olympics project. However, he faces immediate resistance from the local government, particularly from Mayor Fukumoto Junya (played by Sawamura Ikkii) who plans to dissolve Kagura Village under the pretense of urban development. Department Chief Yamada Daichi (portrayed by Muro Tsuyoshi) and other agricultural department staff, acting as the mayor’s followers, are equally unwelcoming to this city outsider.
Even Misaki Yukari (played by Aso Kumiko), assigned as Asai’s assistant, is secretly tasked with monitoring him to ensure he “doesn’t cause trouble.” Despite this opposition, Asai quickly succeeds by organizing a village festival with help from his childhood friend Togawa Masato (Yamamoto Koji), a management consultant, and Komoda Kozaburo (Issey Ogata), a highly respected Shinto priest.
Asai continues implementing successful initiatives including support programs for new residents, tourism promotion highlighting local ingredients, and matchmaking events between villagers and urban women. These achievements gradually unite the village residents, restoring their hope for the future.
The story culminates in an ambitious project to transform the village’s liability – an abandoned quarry – into an attraction, aiming to turn the entire village into an interactive experience destination.
