Synopsis

During the early Meiji period, as the world became captivated by the civilization and enlightenment movement, society underwent a dramatic transformation, and people’s values changed significantly. In this era, where those who rode the winds of change and those left behind by the times became visible, mysterious incidents began occurring frequently.

 

Enter Yuki Shinjuro, a special detective recently returned from overseas studies who enjoys deep trust from the Metropolitan Police, who sharply points out the truth behind these cases. Izumiyama Toranosuke, a former swordsmanship student of Katsu Kaishu who loves solving difficult cases through deduction, is always being looked down upon and comes crying to his respected mentor Kaishu, relying on his master’s brilliant mind and insight. Around these two and Katsu Kaishu gather unique individuals, including Min, Katsu Kaishu’s wife, who is a former geisha with a strong motherly spirit; Rie, the daughter of a wealthy merchant who has fallen for Shinjuurou; Hananoya Inga, a popular fiction writer; and Hayami Seigen, the Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector who finds Shinjuurou troublesome. With their help, as the mystery-solving progresses, the anxieties and love-hate relationships that people harbor in the new Meiji era begin to emerge.
