Synopsis

Oshin, wife of the impoverished hatamoto samurai Katsu family, maintains her innocent smile daily despite constant financial worries. Her husband is Katsu Kokichi, a naturally reckless man. Watching both parents with calm observation is their son Rintaro, who will eventually become the famous “Katsu Kaishu.”

 

Kokichi throws himself into job hunting and finally manages to secure an opportunity thanks to his parents’ connections and gifts. However, a major hurdle awaits him: he must handle the entertainment duties for a group of unpleasant colleagues. His wife, Oshin, innocently wishes for her husband’s success, but complications arise.

 

This historical family comedy depicts the daily struggles and hopes of a poor samurai family during the Edo period, centered around the household that would produce one of Japan’s most famous naval commanders and statesmen.
