Synopsis

An adaption of Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s novel ‘The Makioka Sisters’ not set in the period leading up to Japan entering the Second World War (like the original novel) but in the 1990’s, after the collapse of the economic bubble.

At the series’ center are the four Makioka sisters, who after the bankruptcy of their father’s company and his death, are confronted with the fact that their once rich & prestigious family is now facing a decline. The plot focuses on the third sister, Yukiko, who is unmarried altough she is past 30 (a fact almost unheard of in the social caste the Makioka family inhabits) and the countless Miai (arranged & formal meetings with a prospective spouse) she goes through as well as the youngest sister Taeko, who repeatedly rebels against the rules the ‘Makioka’ family name imposes on her.
