Synopsis

Ikebukuro Streets Set the Stage for Drama in “Cheap Love”

In the bustling streets of Ikebukuro, veteran scout Junichi Yanase (Takashi Sorimachi) and his younger associate Ryo Kagaya (Hisashi Yoshizawa) search for talent. With his signature sunglasses, red shirt, and leather jacket, Yanase uses cheesy pick-up lines like, “I feel a miracle happening. Can’t you see the red thread?” Despite his confident front, Yanase’s seven years of scouting are marked by emotional vulnerability, frequent failures, and an endearing charm. Ryo, a devoted follower who calls him “boss,” is a Rikkyo University student in his third year after two failed attempts to get in. The odd-couple duo even lives together.

One day, Ryo approaches Nanami Kotozuka (Mayu Tsuruta), but Yanase intervenes, declaring that “29 is out of the question.” Annoyed by his words, Nanami storms off. A middle school music teacher, Nanami is tired of her monotonous life and reluctantly agrees to an arranged marriage with elite government employee Katsuaki Manabe (Ikki Sawamura), a match set up by her father, Toyohiko (Hisashi Igawa), who works at the Suginami Ward Office.

Their second encounter happens late at night in a gyudon (beef bowl) shop, where Yanase is caught dining and dashing. As Nanami chases after him, she trips and falls, creating an awkward yet fateful meeting.

Meanwhile, Yanase faces trouble when Juri Aoyama (Mami Kurosaka), a talent he scouted, takes an advance payment of 800,000 yen and vanishes. The owner of their scouting agency “Hungry Heart,” Tetsuya Akabane (Takashi Naito), holds Yanase responsible. After tracking down Juri, Yanase learns that she was scammed out of the money by her boyfriend. Unable to bring himself to punish her, Yanase lets her go, demonstrating his soft heart yet again. However, his actions lead to trouble, as he’s beaten up by employees of the shop where Juri was supposed to work.

Bloodied and bruised, Yanase crosses paths with Nanami once more on a train platform late at night, setting the stage for a tale of redemption, romance, and unexpected connections.
