Synopsis
North Korean agents abducted at least 17 Japanese citizens beginning in the late 1970’s. Only 5 returned. NHK interviewed over 100 former investigators, diplomats and others to uncover why the case remains unresolved to this day. Additionally, the drama version which was released in Japan also contributed for better presentation of the stories in this documentary.

In Japan, NHK released an interview-documentary, a main documentary, and a drama version about the North Korean abductions. However, NHK World-Japan compiled all of those three parts in this two-part documentary for international release.
In Part 1, NHK interviews former police officers who investigated a series of cases where young couples went missing. They reveal why it took so long to recognize the link with North Korea. In Part 2, they interview a former North Korean spy whose confession to the police helped uncover the true nature of the abductions. But the case remains unresolved due to diplomatic deadlock.
