Smells Like Green Spirit

The protagonist of this story is a boy named Mishima Futoshi, who is bullied by his classmates because of his long hair. Every day, he secretly puts on his mother’s lipstick and tries on her clothes. One day, he spots Kirino, the leader of the group that bullied him, holding the lipstick he had lost earlier. Kirino was trying to apply the lipstick that Futoshi had used to his own lips. Gradually, Futoshi comes to terms with his own identity. This is the story of young boys searching for a place they can truly be themselves…

Released in June 2025, Smells Like Green Spirit has been re-edited into a movie version, with a new additional episode’s length of content added.

The drama was released in 2023. and follows Mishima Futoshi, bullied by his classmates due to his long floppy hair. Every day, he secretly applies his mother’s lipstick and tries on her clothes. One day he witnesses Kirino, the leader of the group of students who bullied him, attempting to apply the makeup he had dropped earlier. Kirino, who hides their “true self” throughout school life, Yumeno Taro, one member of a bullying group that “for some reason” strongly targets Mishima, and Yanagida, a newly appointed social studies teacher who is “unusually” concerned about Mishima. As Mishima awakens to their own identity, the “hidden emotions” of Kirino, Yumeno, and Yanagida are gradually revealed.

Their fleeting coming-of-age summer story begins here, searching somewhere in this world for a place where they can be their “true selves.”
