Synopsis

Inspired by a true story surrounding the “unknown children” who lived through the era of postwar Japan.

This work was inspired by the existence of the “unknown children” who lived in postwar Japan, whom Nishikawa encountered during the production of Under the Open Sky.
 
In postwar Japan, comfort facilities for occupying forces and street prostitution spread throughout cities, and even young girls faced the constant threat of sexual exploitation. To escape that reality, one girl chose to hide her gender and live as a boy. This film tells the story of an ordinary girl whose life is transformed by war.
The protagonist, Kotoko, once lived a normal life with her father, who was a musician. However, the war and Japan’s defeat stripped everything away from her, forcing her to make the painful choice to “give up her own identity in order to survive.”
Meanwhile, Sone Fumiko, who once took part in militarist education as a schoolteacher, loses both her beliefs and social standing after Japan’s defeat. Caught between a harsh reality and her own helplessness, she is drawn into a crawl and unforgiving fate.
