Synopsis

Inspired by the true story of Haruna Ai, a Japanese transgender TV personality and singer. “This is I” is based on the real-life experiences shared in Haruna Ai’s autobiography “Subarashiki, Kono Jinsei” and Dr. Wada’s book “Penis Cutter.”

The story follows Kenji, a young boy who has struggled with his identity since childhood and endured society’s cold stares, yet never gave up on his dream of becoming an idol like Seiko Matsuda. Wada, a surgeon who had never truly understood the pain of those experiencing gender dysphoria, is forced to confront that reality after meeting Kenji. Kenji later becomes the patient in Wada’s very first gender-affirming surgery.

Kenji chooses to live life on his own terms, while Wada, torn by the question of what “true medicine” really means, continues to stand by his patient. Amid public backlash and prejudice, the two – both burdened by loneliness — forge a deep and irreplaceable bond of trust and understanding.
