Synopsis

Residing in a town within Japan’s Kansai region lives Reiko (Koyuki) with her three sons and husband. Their youngest, Satoshi (Tanaka Taketo), innocently raised surrounded by the love of his family, lost vision in both eyes by the time he was nine years old. But despite her worries, he goes on to enjoy high school life at a Tokyo-based school for the blind. Then, at 18, he loses his hearing…

Deaf and blind, feeling as though he has been thrown into a void of space, what gives him the impetus to rise up from loneliness is a novel method of communication called braille–and so a mother and child’s difficult path is carved, faced with courage and a hopeful future.

Based around the life of Fukushima Satoshi, a disability researcher and advocate, who became Japan’s first deafblind student to earn a college degree as well as the world’s first deafblind professor.
