Synopsis

Set in 1950s Fukuoka, Toshiyuki and his wife Chiyoko run a small grocery store called Fukunoya (Lucky Grocers) in the Nakasu district where Toshiyuki spends his days trying to reproduce mentaiko–deep-seasoned spicy cod-roe he used to eat in Busan. While manning the store one day, Toshiyuki sees a girl in ragged clothes attempting to shoplift a product. Upon learning that she is one of his son’s classmates who’s lost her parents in the war and has no money to purchase even a rucksack and a pair of shoes for her school excursion, he decides to offer his help.
