Synopsis

A live-action film adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by Shiomi Natsue, this sweeping love story follows a modern-day high school girl who slips back in time to wartime Japan, where she falls into a bittersweet romance with a young kamikaze pilot.

Yuri is a high school girl frustrated with both her parents and school. After a heated argument with her mother over her future, she storms out of the house and spends the night at the remains of a nearby air raid shelter. When she wakes the next morning, she finds herself in Japan in June 1945. Rescued by a passing young man, Akira, she is taken to a military-designated diner, where she meets the proprietress Tsuru, student worker Chiyo, and Akira’s fellow servicemen Ishimaru, Itakura, Teraoka, and Kato. Yuri finds herself drawn to Akira’s sincerity and gentle nature — but he is a kamikaze pilot, destined to fly on a mission from which he will never return.
