Synopsis

A contemporary Japanese reimagining of Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment,” exploring the fundamental question “What defines human worth?” through the lens of modern Japanese society.

Miroku, a university dropout confined to his room, struggles between an inflated sense of self-worth and acute feelings of inferiority. A terrifying plan takes root in his mind: the murder of Baba Hikari, a high school student who controls an underage prostitution ring. His internal monologue justifies the deed: “If someone only hurts themselves and others by living, are they not merely vermin? Is removing such vermin truly a crime?” “Surely achieving a greater purpose justifies bloodshed.” Driven by these dark thoughts, Miroku finally takes action.
