Synopsis

The Ban family lives in a residential neighborhood in Setagaya, Tokyo—a large, traditionally poor family that is unaffected by the trend toward nuclear families. The protagonist Ban Sakurako (Ashida Mana) is the eldest daughter among four siblings.

Since their mother, Yoko (Watanabe Mai) passed away from illness six months ago, Sakurako has taken charge of all household duties, ruling the family with an iron fist like a “drill sergeant” through strict words and actions that keep everyone trembling in fear. While the family is still healing from the devastating loss of their mother, Sota suddenly returns from his work in America with American woman Alice Shepard (Charlotte Kate Fox), whom he has married after dating for just a few days, introducing her as their new mother. Sakurako is outraged that her father would marry a foreigner he never even dated, only six months after their mother’s death.
