Synopsis

40-year-old Kotani Hitomi is the mother of two elementary school-aged sons, and works as a long-distance bus driver. She is a “pretty mother” to her children. However, Hitomi used to live as Kotani Hitoshi, physically and legally a “man.” Diagnosed with gender identity disorder, Hitomi underwent surgery, changed her name, and became a “woman,” but her family register still lists her as a “man.”

The Gender Identity Disorder Special Cases Act would allow people to change their identity if certain conditions were met, but Hitomi, having children, was unable to change her gender.

With the help of those around her, Hitomi takes a stand to revise the Gender Identity Disorder Special Cases Act for the sake of her children, her family, and her own identity.
