Synopsis

Set during Japan’s high economic growth period, this compelling family drama centers on Manpyo Daisuke, the owner-president of Hanshin Bank, ranked tenth in deposit holdings, who also serves as head of the vast Manpyo conglomerate encompassing numerous business ventures. When Daisuke learns from his son-in-law Mima, an elite Ministry of Finance bureaucrat married to his eldest daughter Ichiko about impending city bank reorganization plans, he schemes to absorb and merge with major banks to ensure survival.

The complex Manpyo household includes Daisuke’s wife Yasuko, eldest son Teppei who serves as executive managing director of Hanshin Special Steel—another pillar supporting the Manpyo conglomerate alongside Hanshin Bank, second son Ginpei who works at Hanshin Bank, second daughter Niko, third daughter Sanko, and notably, Daisuke’s long-time live-in mistress Aiko. Aiko wields significant influence within the household and actively promotes strategic marriage alliances for the Manpyo family, creating resentment among Teppei and his siblings.

The father-son relationship deteriorates further when Teppei clashes with Daisuke over financing for blast furnace construction—a project representing Teppei’s lifelong ambition—deepening their bitter conflict in this intricate tale of family power struggles and corporate politics.
