Synopsis

It is said that the skill of miyadaiku – Japanese carpenters who construct and repair shrines and temples – are not obtained through words but by observing over long periods of time, yet Nishioka Tsunekazu (1908 – 1995) felt differently. Called the Oni of Horin-ji and the Last Miyadaiku, he was known for his work on projects like the Haryu-ji overhaul and Yakushi-ji’s Hakuko Garan renovation, and through words he hoped to impart architectural experience and technique to younger generations. With documentary footage and interviews with those who knew him, Oni ni Kike explores the thoughts he entrusted to his words.
