Synopsis

The title LOVED ONE carries the reverence forensic scientists show to the dead — a way of referring to them not as “the deceased,” but as someone who was once cherished by another. People who were someone’s family, someone’s partner, someone’s friend.
Following the silent, final traces left behind by the dead, the series carefully chronicles the cases taken on by MEJ (Medical Examiner Japan), a newly formed forensic specialist team, as they tackle a series of challenging and complex investigations.

Dean Fujioka stars as Mizusawa Masumi, an eccentric genius forensic pathologist returned from the US, where he spent years performing autopsies as a medical examiner. He is brilliant and elite yet unpretentious, with tousled hair and an elusive, hard-to-read manner.

Takiuchi Kumi plays Kiryu Maho, MEJ’s director and a fiercely ambitious bureaucrat. Raised by a single mother and supported by government welfare, she entered the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare determined to “build a system where everyone can live with a smile,” but with her ambitions stalled and her promotion prospects fading, she finds herself at a crossroads in her mid-thirties.
