Utada Hikaru Says Goodbye to the Mic

Singer Utada Hikaru (27) held her last concert in Yokohama on 12/9 before her impending break starting next year. After she sang her first song, “Goodbye Happiness” she screamed, “Let’s go, everyone!” Roughly 14,000 fans yelled in support. Utada yelled, “Today is exactly my 12 year anniversary of debuting.”

Utada sang a total of 22 songs including the encore. After singing “Time Will Tell” a song she created before her debut, she waved and said thank you countless times on stage.

Next year Utada will stop activities as a singer and she’s planning to devote herself to “human activities.” She has no plans to make any public appearances from now on either. However, she has hinted to fans that she’ll make a return. “Will you guys still call me Hikki even when I become an old lady? Let’s have a concert when I’m an old lady.” She also declared that she’s not retiring. “I’m still bound to my contract and I’ll still release pieces. I think I can’t perform any concerts since my break is so short…” Utada made her speech short holding back her tears.

On 12/8, she had 28,000 members in the audience in the same arena. The 12/8 show was also broadcasted live worldwide via Ustream, and overall 925,000 total hits in the channels (345,000 uniques). The concert was also broadcasted live in 64 theaters nationwide where 17,000 members attended.
