Mizushima Hiro Poplar Novelist Award

Actor Mizushima Hiro’s (26) book, “Kagerou” which won first place in the 5th Poplar Publishing Awards, sold a total of 680,000 copies in just two days since it’s release. “Kagerou” has surpassed seasoned author Murakami Haruki’s third volume of [amazon_link id=”4103534257″ target=”_blank” ]1Q84[/amazon_link]. Mizushima originally published the book under his real name Saito Tomohiro.

Poplar Publishing which published the book reports that the book sold 430,000 copies on the 15th and this morning (the 16th) it was sold out in most stores. In order to meet the rush orders, Poplar has already decided on a second pressing of 250,000. This number is unprecedented for a new author.

In general, authors receive roughly 10% of royalties from books sold. A single “Kagerou” book retails for 1470 yen. If Mizushima’s contract is equal to 10%, with some simple calculation, he makes 99,960,000 yen (1,191,423 dollars).

Mizushima took to Twitter and posted his reaction regarding the warm reception of the book, “Thank you everyone. I’m glad I wrote the book.” “This is a day that I’ll never forget in my lifetime.” And in regards to his next work, he tweeted this on 12/12, “When it’s time I’ll announce it! Please look forward to it when that happens.”

There’s also some talks about turning “Kagerou” into a movie.
