Singer Utada Hikaru’s (27) grandmother, Fuji Keiko’s (59) mother, Takeyama Sumiko was admitted into a hospital on the 4th for liver cancer and passed away on the 6th. She was 80 years old. Utada tweeted that day, “I just found out my grandmother on my mom’s side passed away.”

Mrs. Takeyama and Mrs. Fuji were on bad terms more than 20 years ago, so Utada rarely saw her grandmother. Utada reflects, “For a number of reasons, I rarely saw my grandma, but I’m thankful that she took care of me when I was younger.” Utada laments, “Thanks grandma. It’s unfortunate that I can’t burn incense for you.”
